Salt & Honey by Candi Miller is a well-researched historical novel set in South Africa in the 1950s and 60s. I knew very little about this piece of history, and it is exactly as sad as I thought it would be. The story follows Koba, a San girl who is orphaned and then raised by the same white family that caused her so much loss. Without giving away too many details, I do want to mention that some parts of this story could be deeply upsetting for sensitive readers. In my opinion, though, it contains ugly truths that should be faced and is well worth the read.
Candi Miller does an incredible job of creating vivid descriptions. I could see places I’ve never visited and people I’ve never met from her words alone. I think these descriptions might be the strongest aspect of Salt & Honey. I also found the characters to be very well-written and complex. Marta made me think about the way we justify our actions to believe we're doing the right thing. Koba demonstrated strength and survival, and my heart broke for her. I truly felt for Mannie and the extreme confusion, fear, and cognitive dissonance he must have experienced. Many of the relationships were also complex and beautiful. Using characters to draw out real human emotions is a sure sign of a talented writer.
The audiobook is narrated by John Maytham, who does a fantastic job of bringing the characters to life. He changes accents and gives each character a unique voice. It’s helpful, especially in the beginning when you are still getting to know the main characters. You can easily tell when someone new is speaking. I also found it valuable to hear the correct pronunciation of many words that I might not have known otherwise.
