Scatterlings by Zeena Nackerdien starts off strong with A Robin, a poem about a bird nearly dying and being saved by an old man, and the man feels good about it at the end. This brought me into the work and showed me that it would be full of hope and applaud the little things in life, like nature and love and moments. Kingfisher is another poem, short and succinct, that simply applauds the beauty of something in the world without asking for more. Many of the poems are short, but each is packed with deep meaning and a lot of themes and meanings; for example, An American Race balances discussing integration and mixing cultures with the thrill of a horse race and seeing Secretariat win, showing that, despite everything, there are commonalities in the world when we look past petty things like race and prejudice.
Scatterlings is a collection of poems that the author describes as showcasing factors of humanity like disease, crime, and alienation; it is intended to showcase the resilience of humanity, which it definitely does. It was hard picking a favorite out of this work, though I am a fan of horse racing and Secretariat so I think An American Race is my favorite. Scatterlings by Zeena Nackerdien is an easy to read collection, and anyone who puts their mind to it will find something deep and meaningful to take away, whether it is hope in humanity or a love of nature. You'll find it all here, and I highly recommend this work. Excellent poems! The poems are amazing.
