Sea Star Cookies: Fearful Fergus Learns Water Safety is a charming children’s picture book written by Sarah Chaires, with illustrations by Elizabeth Tortora. The story follows Fergus, a cautious puppy, as he learns about swimming safety from his mom. When Fergus’ mom takes him to a swimming pool, he encounters more water than he has ever seen before and can’t wait to dive in and play. However, she explains that he must first learn how to be safe in the water. Although he does not understand the meaning of the word safe, he decides to follow her advice. She helps him put on a life jacket, explains the important role of lifeguards, and prepares him for his first swim. Fergus jumps into the pool but struggles to navigate the water, even with the life jacket keeping him afloat. Fortunately, his mom has a special treat to help him find his way back to her arms.
Sea Star Cookies: Fearful Fergus Learns Water Safety is a delightful story about navigating water safely and building confidence. It teaches children essential water safety practices and the importance of perseverance. Fergus, an adorable English Mastiff, is easy to fall in love with, and his mom’s dedication to teaching him how to swim is a reminder for pet owners to prepare their animals for various situations. Sarah Chaires uses engaging action words that make the story entertaining. I appreciate how she highlights key water safety terms, such as safety, lifeguard, and floating, and provides practical tips to help readers understand and apply the core concepts of the book to ensure safety around water. The book also features a recipe for Sea Star Shortbread Cookies that families can try together. The colorful illustrations bring the story to life. Overall, this is an excellent book and a must-read for anyone interested in learning about water safety for both children and animals.
