Search & Seizure is a coming of age memoir written by Marc Hoberman. When Marc was eleven, he got to meet his maternal grandfather, a composer whose work was used in film and television throughout the '40s, '50s and '60s. That meeting and the one other time he got to spend time with his grandfather were pivotal moments for him. They shared a love of music, show business and the limelight, and his grandfather seemed larger than life somehow. That first momentous meeting happened during a tumultuous and disturbing time when his mother suffered a stroke and was confined to a hospital bed for a month. When she returned home, life went back to normal for Marc and his sister, who attended school in Yonkers until their parents announced that they’d all be moving to Florida in just a few weeks. Marc was aghast at the idea of losing a school life he enjoyed, the school band, his friends and his girlfriend; his sister, who was several years older than he, refused to go. Florida was different. He transferred to the new school mid-year and the curriculum was not as advanced as he was used to. Making new friends was challenging as well. Just when he began to feel somewhat comfortable again, Marc suffered an epileptic seizure while driving with his cousin to visit a friend.
Marc Hoberman’s coming of age memoir, Search & Seizure, is about life, the strange things that get thrown at people when they least expect it, and how not to let those things define who or what you are and do. Along the way, there’s one of the most enjoyable coming of age memoirs that I’ve read in some time. Hoberman is a natural born entertainer. He says it in the beginning of this memoir, and the proof is to be found throughout this candid, beautifully written and marvelous tale of facing one’s teenage years with a serious, chronic and misunderstood ailment.
I loved his stories about family life and how his father’s penchant for gambling actually fuelled his incessant search for the best care and treatment options for his son, and I could clearly visualize his mother sobbing as she watched her only son prepare to drive off to college. Seizures are a fairly serious topic, but don’t let that dissuade you from diving into Search & Seizure. Hoberman had me laughing out loud as I read about pranks and the many other hilarities to be found within these pages, and his mother’s advice to him when he was first diagnosed should be required reading for any family or individual facing a similar situation. Search & Seizure is a memoir about growing up with epilepsy that somehow manages to make you laugh and then feel somewhat bereft when you finish the last few lines. It’s most highly recommended.
