Secondhand Purses by Elizabeth Butts is a standalone novel about Alex, a woman hardened by time, who learns that love and affection (and a guy with tattoos) can melt your heart. Butts is an indie author, so I really, really like her. There is something to be said about an author who takes charge and makes sure the reader gets what she wanted to say. I could feel the effort she put in to make this novel good and, trust me, this novel is good.
The novel follows the story of Alex, a woman who is not afraid to say what is on her mind, without a filter. But that doesn't mean she does not care for you. If she loves you, you know it, and she will do everything in her power to make sure you love yourself as much. She will also tell you everything as it is, but not to Nick. Why, you ask? Because she likes him, and his “Italian good looks,” body and tattoos. He is the man of her dreams, but she does not fall in love any more. With her past history, life does not give second chances. But what if it does? Will she take it?
This novel was amazing and very funny. The humor was there, but so were many other emotions that you feel. Alex is very relatable and, yes, we all have that one friend just like her. The story had a spark that captured my attention. Alex and Nick had a chemistry that will make anyone swoon (or sweat). I liked the way Elizabeth Butts described her characters. Everything was spot on and made to be read. This is definitely a novel I would read again and again, and recommend to my book club - which I already did.
