Secrets of Shadow Lane is an urban drama by C.K. Harris. After spending some time with her boyfriend Nick in Los Angeles, Sophia Lanera realizes their relationship is incompatible and returns home to Shadow Lane in Dallas. However, she quickly discovers that her neighbors in the next-door duplex are no longer the same. She meets Jet, an ex-convict recently released from prison, and his girlfriend, Destiny, an exotic dancer at a club, and doesn't get a good impression of either of them. Meanwhile, her neighbor in Duplex B, Taylor, is becoming increasingly paranoid due to the mind games and pranks played on him by Jet. But Taylor also has a history, and now an FBI agent is in the mix. Will Sophia find the peace she's been looking for in her home ever again?
Secrets of Shadow Lane is a riveting slice-of-life story with mystery and intrigue. There is a palpable sense of suspense and tension that C.K. Harris brings to the narrative that keeps your eyes glued to the pages. As a reader, you're never quite sure what's going to happen next but know it will be fascinating. The author also infuses some psychological thriller elements that make the story unpredictable. Sophia is a likable protagonist who readers will find easy to relate to. Her willingness to help Taylor clashes with her frustration at Taylor's unhinged paranoia, and it adds some complex layers to her character. I was also pleasantly surprised by the amount of humor sprinkled throughout the book, often in small doses of dark comedy. All in all, a very entertaining novel for readers of mystery and drama.
