Author Biography

As a single mother trying to get through school, Miranda K. Simon supported her child as a hostess dancer and exotic dancer. She was one of the lucky ones who successfully finished college.

Years later, she wrote her memoir Sexy Serenity to expose the underground world of hostess dancing in Los Angeles, California and tell the truth about the too-often glamorized stripping career. You can sometimes find her tweeting or blogging about her experiences.

A mother will do whatever it takes to provide the very best for her child or children, even when it might go beyond those things which she has always believed she could never bring herself to do. Miranda K. Simon shows how she did just that, and then discovered that she was trapped in a world beyond her control, in her memoir Sexy Serenity. Miranda had a bright, intelligent and promising future ahead of her when she finished high school. However, Ricky had come into her life on a fling and left her with a child named Jacob. In spite of the rough road ahead of her, Miranda made up her mind that she would do whatever it took to stay in college until she earned her degree and made certain that Jacob had a place to live, food and clothing. Though she'd been raised to look down upon those who worked in the adult entertainment industry, as a last resort, she ended up being dragged into it by her friend Yessenia. Supporting each other throughout this difficult journey into a world in which neither belonged, Miranda had made up her mind that what she was doing was only temporary and that she would come right out of it all as soon as she finished her degree. As she struggled to keep from blurring the lines of the boundaries she had set and to make ends meet financially, she discovered that it became harder and harder to see the light at the end of the tunnel. Would she be sucked into the vortex of the adult entertainment industry forever or would she be able to struggle her way back out again?

Sexy Serenity is an honest look at a very misunderstood vocation. Miranda K. Simon very clearly portrays the reasons why young women often find their way into the adult entertainment industry, as well as the reasons that it becomes extremely difficult to leave it. It exposes misguided thinking, not only on the part of the providers and the clientele, but also how the business world and corporate America is hardly better. This memoir reads like a novel, drawing out every ounce of emotion from the reader and keeping him or her turning pages. Most of all, Sexy Serenity is an inspiring example of how the will of a mother to provide the best for her son overcomes all odds to finally reach her destination. A must-read for anyone who is struggling to get their life back under control and find peace with themselves.

In writing classes everywhere, instructors expound on the benefits of having a great opening sentence. The first sentence of Sexy Serenity, a memoir by Miranda K. Simon is an eye opener and compels you to read a little more to find out why she feels the need to make such a statement. The excellent writing and authentic look into her life will keep you reading to the end. The main character Miranda is a snapshot of a certain cross section of young American women who find themselves dancing or stripping for money, despite their strong Christian, middle class American values. I think it would be nice if Sexy Serenity was read by all their customers. Miranda K. Simon walks us through the process of entering the seedy but profitable world of striptease.

I like the inside glimpse into the mind and life of the stripper and what the girls really think of their customers. The characters were very realistically drawn. I also appreciated the look at societal factors that can come together to push a woman into this life. The fact that she was an excellent student and really quite naive when she and her friend Yessenia go looking for "hostess" jobs is sad and a little funny. I can't help but think America is wasting a lot of female talent and potential, but sadly we are probably not wasting as much as a lot of other countries are. This is a story that needed to be told and needs to be read.

Sexy Serenity, a Memoir by Miranda K. Simon is a fascinating story about Simon’s experiences working in the adult entertainment industry. In this book, she shares what really goes on in the adult entertainment industry as well as her own thoughts and experiences while working there.

In Sexy Serenity, a Memoir, Simon tells how she worked from 1998 to 2003 in the industry, first as a dance hostess, then as a stripper. Not only was Simon a single mom at the time, but also a full time college student. She chose to work in that industry because she made good money and was able to support her son and her schooling. At first I was curious about how someone would get into that line of work, but after reading Simon’s book I can understand why she chose it. A lot of times women joke about wanting a “sugar daddy”, but after seeing what is actually expected from a woman who had one, I hope it may stop other women from wanting one. Working in those types of jobs alone is hard, and I thought that Simon was lucky to have Yesenia by her side during all those years. Many people do not have and will never have a good friend like that. I really liked that Simon tells the reader what becomes of her and Yesenia at the end of the book.

I think a lot of women would do the same type of job as Simon did if they were in her shoes. It is amazing that Simon was able to maintain good grades while working a job she hated and taking care of her son. Overall, I really enjoyed reading Sexy Serenity and wish the best for Simon and Yesenia. I recommend this book to anyone who thinks that working in the adult entertainment industry is easy.

Sexy Serenity, A Memoir by Miranda K. Simon is a fascinating memoir that throws light on the shady world of a sex worker. Miranda's story shows readers an honest view of what really exists behind the glamour and paint, and what goes inside the mind of sex workers. Miranda is forced to give up her morals and Christian values that had been instilled in her from childhood to become a dance hostess at a downtown club in Los Angeles. She has no other choice but to take it up to make ends meet and take care of her one-year-old son. She transforms herself into Serenity, an exotic dancer who has no qualms in removing her clothes for men. Every time she tries to quit stripping, she finds herself faced with new problems. Will Miranda finally be able to give it all up and live a decent life?

The memoir is a compelling read with some heartrending moments which speak about the problems faced by single mothers. The author is honest in her views and, at times, funny too. The book shatters the myth about the glamour that exists behind the dancers in strip clubs. The author shares every detail of her life with readers, exposing not only her life but also the shady underground world of hostess dancing and strippers in Los Angeles. It is a book that will keep readers glued till the very end with Miranda's actual life behind the glitz and glamour.

Sexy Serenity by Miranda K. Simon is the author’s memoirs about her time as an exotic dancer in California during the late 1990s and early 2000s. Miranda is a teenager when she finds herself pregnant. Determined to finish her schooling though, she enrolls in community college. Living with her mother and brother, as well as best friend, Yessenia, Miranda struggles with caring for her young son and maintaining rent with her minimum wage jobs. When Yessenia suggests trying exotic dancing, Miranda figures she has nothing to lose. Through her memoir, the reader delves into the underworld of exotic dancing and what the emotional and physical tolls are on a single mother in that profession.

I was very surprised by how much I enjoyed this memoir. Miss Simon is candid in her prose, not leaving out details that a reader may find uncomfortable. I am a pretty open-minded person so I did admire how she worked her hardest to provide for her son, even if there were times she was burnt-out or overwhelmed with schoolwork. I could also see how some women find the profession addictive, making more money than they would at a regular nine to five job. I would have liked to see more warnings to women about meeting people online. Miss Simon does speak about her wariness when it came to meeting men outside of the club, but I feel there should be a stronger point made that it isn’t always safe. Overall, though, Sexy Serenity by Miranda K. Simon was certainly an eye-opener into a world that is often shadowed with stigma.

Sexy Serenity, A Memoir by Miranda K. Simon is an autobiographical account of her life as an exotic dancer and stripper. The account starts with Miranda K. Simon as a teenager and unwed mother with a child to support and college to go to. She and her friend, Yessenia, who also comes from an unstable background, decide to try working at hostess bars in California to make ends meet. One thing leads to another and soon they find themselves going out with clients for money. Miranda soon realizes that it is not what she wants, and turns to working at nude strip clubs. After turning 21, the cycle just continues as she works at one strip club after another until she graduates college. Once she finds a “real” job, Miranda enjoys it for a while until she feels that she is part of a rat race in corporate America. She decides to leave the job and go back to dancing. Whether she continues to do it or finds a way to get out of it forms the remaining part of her story.

Sexy Serenity, A Memoir by Miranda K. Simon is written in a casual, easy-to-read style. The first-hand look at the inner workings of this sex industry is intriguing and I found her writing to be candid. Throughout the book, Miranda mentions that she needed the money and so couldn’t quit dancing. That was the only aspect of the story that I didn’t completely agree with because obviously there are ways to cut back on expenses such as expensive cars and furniture. That being said, one is in no position to judge anyone until they have walked in their shoes. All in all, I admire Miranda for being able to be open and come out with her story. I am sure it can serve as an inspiration to people.
