Shadowed Flame by RJ Blain is an entertaining fantasy urban paranormal genre read. The story follows Matia Evans, a strong and resilient female protagonist. Matia is a successful businesswoman, has numerous romantic prospects, and appears to have it all; her only detraction is that she is color blind. But she doesn't let this impairment get her down and works around it on a daily basis. The color blind part, that she can work with; her supernatural ability to see the shadows of souls....well, that's a bit more complicated. You see, there are others in the world, monsters might be too kind a word to use for them, and they are after humans for two main reasons: prey or mates. Both are not very desirable and Matia has to decide what she will do with this knowledge (that only she can see).
I liked Shadowed Flame and thought Matia was a great lead character. She was inspiring in not only the fact that she rose above her disability of being color blind, but also that she wanted to use her supernatural ability for good. I also thought the author did a nice job in quickly setting up the world and characters and kept the action going. There didn't seem to be much filler and fluff. One other thing to note was that the intimate romance scenes were more like the "fade to black, see the curtains blowing in the wind" type of thing, not getting into the details. This still adds romance and love to the story without being explicit. I note this because I know some readers and parents will appreciate this type of style. I would recommend Shadowed Flame to all fans of supernatural, urban fantasy, and action genres. I look forward to checking out more books by RJ Blain.
