Sheldon’s Time by Lindsey Pope, delightfully and artfully illustrated by Nadja Bullis, is a charming and empowering tale for children in which Sheldon the Crab, Stella the Starfish, and Sully the Seagull find a way to harmonize their divergent energies. Stella and Sully are eager to engage Sheldon in outside adventures, while Sheldon’s favorite activity is reading his new pirate book, safe in his cozy nook. All three learn valuable lessons as they come to understand the need for balance between alone time and time with friends. This message is both essential and timely for today’s children, who are often reluctant to engage in real-time play with their peers. The message is vital, and the narrative is written in a pitch-perfect, jaunty rhyming style that makes the reading fun and the story easy to remember.
The most valuable aspect of the message in Sheldon’s Time is the assertion that books have tremendous value, but friends do, too. This enlightened perspective is offered in a straightforward and age-appropriate form that will be easy for young readers to understand, and which may well serve as a tremendously effective discussion starter for children and adults alike. Nadja Bullis’ colorful, whimsical illustrations bring Sheldon’s world to life in vivid detail, rendering the three central characters in an animated but relatable style that reinforces the air of genuine friendship woven into the text. Sheldon’s Time by Lindsey Pope is an ideal story to help children understand the value of being alone while communicating clearly to friends the much-needed message that they are valued, even when we take time for ourselves.
