Shifting Stars is the first installment of Gary Stringer's epic fantasy series, The Salvation of Tempestria. In an attempt to save the world of Tempestria, Arshes Megane, an immortal born within the Guardianship, sends her Aunt Mandalee back in Time to seek help from her father, Daelen StormTiger. To provide context, she starts narrating the tale of her mother, Catriona Redfletching, a half-Faery druid magic-user, and her two friends, Mandalee the White Cleric and Dreya the Dark. After witnessing the deaths of her parents, Catriona sets herself on a single-minded pursuit of knowledge. She feels determined to unlock the mysteries of her Crystal Mage Staff. During her quest, she befriends the White Cleric Mandalee and forms a strong bond with the powerful and unpredictable Dreya, who plans to kill Daelen StormTiger one day.
Shifting Stars pushes the boundaries of imagination to its limits and fills you with a sense of wonder and awe. This is a stellar start to an epic fantasy series containing enormous potential. Author Gary Stringer sets no limits on his wondrously creative fantasy elements but still somehow manages to make them feel grounded in reality by borrowing aspects from real-world science to explain the mechanics behind them. All of the three magic systems are distinct and well-thought-out. My favorite aspect of the book was the relationship dynamic between the three friends, Catriona, Dreya, and Mandalee. If you're also a fan of epic fantasy like me, I urge you to grab a copy of Shifting Stars.
