Author Biography

Deborah K Frontiera grew up in Michigan's Upper Peninsula and lived in several places before moving to Houston with her family in 1985 where she taught in Houston ISD until 2008. She spent several years after that working for Writers In The Schools as well as writing several other books: children's, nonfiction, fantasy, young adult and poetry. In 2020, she and her husband, now empty nesters, moved back to her native Upper Michigan, but she returns to Houston, TX in the winters to be with her grown daughters and grandchildren. Her friendship with Mary H. Wright began at an SCBWI meeting.
Mary H. Write, a second generation Houstonian, had the original idea for Simon and Company--she and her husband had managed a flea market for many years--but couldn't make the jump from a story too long for a picture book to a beginning chapter book, so she collaborated with Deborah on the final version of Simon and Company. Mary's husband had passed away many years before she and Deborah worked on the book, and in May of 2021, Mary passed away, too, leaving the book to Deborah to continue marketing.

Simon Mouse has always been a curious creature, seeking adventure whenever and wherever he can. When he and his family secretly move with the owners of the house in which they have been living, Simon believes this is his chance to have the most fun and have a true adventure. But when something bad happens and Simon gets separated from his family, he has no idea where he is or if he will ever see them again. With the help of some new friends, Simon finds a new place to live and continues to hope that he will eventually reunite with his family. Full of heart and adventure, Simon and Company: Flea Market Mice by Mary H. Wright and Deborah K. Frontiera is an entertaining chapter book.

I am so glad that I had the opportunity to read Simon and Company: Flea Market Mice. It was a fun and quick read that had me engaged throughout its entirety. Simon was a very interesting character who struggled with some things throughout the story, but he grew by the end of it, making him relatable even though he is a mouse. I also loved that there were several illustrations scattered throughout the story; they really helped me visualize all the craziness that was happening with Simon. I would recommend Simon and Company: Flea Market Mice by Mary H. Wright and Deborah K. Frontiera to children who are starting to get into chapter books and want to follow a mouse on an adventure!
