Author Biography

Tess Rixen is a fourteen-year-old author who devotes most of her time to writing, and not nearly enough time to piano playing. She lives in North Carolina with her parents, an older brother and even older dog. "Slipper Goes to the Park" is the 3rd of her books in Slipper and Friends series. The inspiration for Slipper books comes from a list of rules she made in late 2009, when she was around 7 or 8. She just moved from Georgia to Connecticut with her family, and a list of rules was her way of inserting some order in a bit scary, unknown and new environment. Even though… she wasn’t very good at spelling at the time, Tess had lots of fun writing the ‘rules’. She follows them to this day!

Slipper loves to play with her friends. She is a cat, after all. And cats love to play. When her best friend, Buddy, who just happens to be a dog, comes over, Slipper is very excited. She is surprised to meet Buddy’s roommate, Julia, a white ferret. Julia is quite the chatterbox, but Slipper warms to her quickly and the three friends go off to the park to play. Slipper loves going to the park. When they arrive at the park, they notice people hard at work picking up the trash. Julia thinks it would be fun to help. So the three friends take some garbage bags and quickly fill them with trash that was littered all over the park. It’s sad when they realize that it took no time at all to fill their garbage bags. “People need to put their trash away, not throw it on the ground,” Slipper meows. And Julia starts talking about the importance of recycling.

Tess Rixen is a young writer with lots of fabulous ideas. Her picture book story, Slipper Goes to the Park, is a cheery story that will not only appeal to young readers, it will also teach them some valuable lessons about littering, recycling, and how important it is to take care of our planet. There is also an underlying lesson about community work and getting along with others and their differences as the three friends, all different animals who wouldn’t normally get along, have fun together and enjoy each other’s company while doing something good for the community. This story is part of a series the author is working on, a series that will allow Slipper the cat to both entertain and educate. Good work, Tess. Keep up the writing!
