“Slotback Rhapsody” by Christopher Harris is a novel based on the character Nick Morrison who is a reserve punter for a special team football league. Morrison has been to several minicamps during football trainings to select players to start on professional football teams. During training minicamps the football teams and players have to improve in performance to keep the coaches from cutting them from the While the 27 year old Morrison thinks he will be cut from the team, he has stated "I will be the best pick for the team.” Morrison also is the smallest player on the team. He travels from one minicamp to the next hoping to have a punter position on a professional football team. The rejection is becoming more despairing each time; however, he is determined to continue in his dream of being placed on a professional team. Christopher Harris gives the reader a detailed look inside a player’s mind, allowing the fan to evaluate the cost of becoming a professional football player.

This is a great guide for the athlete who may be influenced by the character’s need for placement on a professional team against insurmountable odds. The author creates ae strong and believable character in Nick Morrison. He demonstrates what is required to become a better player and competitor despite the obstacles. The information in this novel could become influential in other areas than sports. There are numerous fields where similar obstacles appear. This book may have a limited audience due to the emphasis on the sport of football. I enjoy watching football however I am not interested in the particulars. On the other had this book has a great message that will appeal to sport enthusiast.
