Slow Days by D. S. Getson is a sweet children’s story about a granddaughter named Kya who is bored and needs something to do. Her grandma suggests a walk on the beach. During their walk, they stop and examine many of the sea-related items they see, such as sand dollars and crab shells. Kya learns a great deal and, by the end of the story, even changes her opinion about slow days. The book is filled with details about each sea item examined, while colorful and charming illustrations by Ivy Trazsi grace every page.
Author D. S. Getson begins her story with a premise that many children will relate to – being bored. It’s a common problem in a child’s life. However, Slow Days is not just for children because adults may learn interesting facts they didn’t know before. I didn’t know all of the facts that the author shared through Kya’s knowledgeable grandmother. This book will not only benefit children and adults because of that, but may also spark inspiration in parents for new ways to tackle slow day blues. This book would even be appropriate for elementary school teachers who want to teach students interesting facts about the sea. I enjoyed the book and adored Ivy Trazsi’s illustrations. D. S. Getson has effectively written a book of discovery for parents and children alike. Slow Days will appeal to young and older readers who want to learn while being entertained and inspired.
