In Snowfall by Hermione Lee, Pristina doesn’t mind the cold. She lives in an ice manor in the snowy mountains of Albana, eats ice waffles, and sleeps on an ice bed. Pristina is an ice witch. She lives all alone now that her grandfather is dead. Her parents died when she was an infant and she doesn’t know any other ice witches. She only ventures out of her ice manor when she needs to go to town for supplies, which isn’t very often. When confronted by an evil witch, Pristina finds herself marked with a curse that will see her dead within a year unless she finds true love. She doesn’t believe that finding love is possible until she meets Gabriel, a young wizard. But the wizard is already spoken for by an evil woman whose family is the bane of everyone’s existence in Albana. This woman has set her sights on killing Pristina, just as the ice witch’s parents were killed all those years ago. So much for a quiet life, living all alone in an ice manor.
If you are looking for a happily-ever-after thrilling adventure fairy tale, then look no further. Hermione Lee’s novel Snowfall is an engaging read that will have readers enraptured to the end. The plot is intense and fast-paced, even though most of the story is told in a narrative style, like a fairy tale. There is minimal use of dialogue, but it’s effectively woven into the story and helps develop the characters. The powerful divide between good and evil, paramount in any classic tale, is well executed. Told with the panache of a Brothers Grimm classic, this story will be cherished for generations.
