Sloth’s Totally Not Weird First Day of School by Christie Nicholls is a coming-of-age picture book for young readers. Sloth found the perfect home for himself, along with a family to share his life. He was living a happy life until one day, something had him feeling worried; his first day at school was looming over him. He worried about not fitting in, but luckily, he had siblings to help him out. They decided on a cool outfit and off they went on the school bus. One thing after another kept going wrong throughout the day, leaving Sloth feeling even more out of place. He tried and tried to fit in, but nothing seemed to work. What can Sloth do to finally fit in? Find out in this fun, quirky story.
Sloth’s Totally Not Weird First Day of School was a pleasure to read. Christie Nicholls has created the perfect educational boredom breaker for young readers. It will teach children about self-love and how to accept themselves for who they are. It will reassure them that their differences are what make them unique. I enjoyed the plot, especially the main character being a sloth; I love sloths! And what I loved even more was the incredible illustrations by Claudia Gadotti. They are truly beautiful and bring the characters alive. The story is a great fit for all ages as the writing is simple, allowing children to read or follow along with ease. I can’t recommend this wonderful book enough. I believe it will honestly make a difference in young readers accepting themselves. Christie and Claudia make a great team, and I hope to read more from them soon.
