Death of an Idol: Seoul to Mumbai Mysteries by Rima Ray follows Park Taejoon, or Tae, a former K-pop idol from the group Orion, who left the spotlight after a tragic incident. One of his members, Mino, was found dead after falling from his apartment. Although Tae found the death suspicious, he was frustrated that no one believed him, and it was ruled a suicide. Five years have passed since that incident, and he is now living a private life as a PhD student in Pittsburgh, away from the spotlight. Unfortunately, Tae's world was shattered once again with the news of his fiancée's death. To make matters worse, he noticed the same strange signs when Mino died. This time, however, the police ruled it an accident. With two tragic deaths weighing heavily on him, Tae was determined to uncover the truth. He sought the help of one of the few people who believed his suspicions—a skilled detective named Yoon Hana. Were these deaths merely coincidences, or was he somehow to blame? Join Tae and Hana as they work together to uncover the truth in The Death of an Idol!

Rima Ray’s Death of an Idol is a unique and intriguing read that is moderately paced and well-written. I was captivated from the very beginning and remained engaged until the end. As a fan of several K-pop groups, I was already excited just by reading the title and summary, and the book did not disappoint. I loved all the characters, especially Tae. In addition to his good looks, he is hardworking and embodies the kind of love that everyone needs in their life. The story was described in such detail that I could vividly imagine how each character looked and how the events unfolded, almost as if I were watching a movie. This made reading it even more thrilling. There are also valuable lessons to be learned. One key takeaway for me is the importance of respecting everyone, including the idols and artists we admire. We should allow them their freedom and space, and we must be kind with our words, because, despite the glamorous and happy lives they portray on screen, we often don't know the hardships they faced to achieve their current success. The ending left me even more curious. Overall, it truly is an addictive story! I can’t wait for the next book. Well done!

Death of an Idol by Rima Ray follows Park Taejoon, a former idol and current PhD student living in Pittsburgh, who is drawn back to Korea after the suspicious death of his fiancée, Sonia. Officially ruled an accident, Taejoon doubts the circumstances surrounding her fall on Jeju Island. With the help of Yoon Hana, a former detective turned private investigator, he begins unraveling inconsistencies linked to Sonia’s death. Taejoon’s return also reconnects him with his past as a member of the idol group Orion and unresolved traumas, including the mysterious death of his former bandmate Mino. Meanwhile, the story briefly parallels the life of Nari, a young girl in an abusive household, whose experiences intersect with the unfolding investigation, adding layers to Taejoon’s search for truth and justice.

Death of an Idol: Seoul to Mumbai Mysteries by Rima Ray turned out to be my gateway into the world of K-Pop, and as a woman over a certain age, this was the perfect introduction. Ray writes in an omniscient point of view that suits the shifts across characters and periods, with settings so atmospheric that they are almost textured, leading us through hallabong stalls and basalt guesthouses, and creating a clear sense of place. I like that we are always alerted to something sinister lurking in the background, while the characters we know are developed naturally through memory, conversation, and action. This is also how we find ourselves enmeshed in specific elements of Korean culture, whether it is the incredibly emotional restraint of an industry mother or the complete destruction of respect when the veneer loses some of its polish. Ray keeps us guessing until the final act and is miraculously able to tie it all together. Very highly recommended.

In Death of an Idol by Rima Ray, Tae is from a powerful family. His mother had been a famous actress, but after her marriage into an influential family, her acting career ended. As the second son, without the responsibilities of being the heir, Tae is shaped by his mother to be an actor. As a child, he gets various roles, and later on, he becomes part of The Boys of Orion, which is a popular K-pop group in South Korea. As things unfold, one of the members of the group dies under mysterious circumstances. Tae quits his idol lifestyle and decides to pursue academics in the USA. He falls in love with Sonia, but tragedy strikes again as Sonia dies trying to surprise Tae on his birthday. After talking to Sonia’s sister, Tae decides to return to South Korea to unravel these mysterious murders. How will things turn out?

Death of an Idol by Rima Ray is wonderfully written and takes the reader on a gripping journey filled with unexpected directions. Once you start reading it, there is no stopping. I loved the soundtracks suggested and the introduction to Korean drama and K-pop culture. Rima utilized suspense effectively, which made me look forward to subsequent chapters. I also loved the vivid descriptions of events and emotions, which helped to capture my imagination. The characters are well-developed, and the excellent narration also adds to the overall beauty of the work. The reader will appreciate the easy-to-understand language used, which makes it accessible to all audiences. This was a good read, and I look forward to more books by Rima Ray.
