Something Molly Can’t See is a work of quirky, dramatic and amusing fiction in the chick-lit genre, and was penned by author Carol Maloney Scott. The titular character is our heroine Molly, a thirtysomething who has recently become a single mother after her husband Ray disappears with all their money and another woman. As she begins to re-enter the dating scene, her hopes are high with sexy old friend Tucker Swanson, but nothing in love is ever simple. There are interruptions from the mundane to the sublime as Molly struggles for a quiet new life, and those around her seem determined to make it anything but.
Author Carol Maloney Scott has created a marvelous romp with her varied cast of loveable and loathe-able characters, who are drawn with sharp, amusing dialogue and vivid descriptions. Though the plot is wacky and perfectly timed for its crazy comedic effects, this is also a story with layers and a lot of genuine issues at play. Molly’s separation from Ray, and his sudden return, have levels of intelligent emotional depth amid the chaos, and Molly herself is well-rooted in reality with lots of relatable qualities that the reading audience is sure to fall in love with. She’s a woman getting on with life, no matter what strangeness it throws at her, and this is the onward spirit that becomes the book’s driving force. Overall, Something Molly Can’t See is chick-lit at its best, and a highly recommended read for fans of the genre.
