“We’re people, stories are what we have.” Somewhere, a novel by Ryan Freerksen, is a reminder that we create those stories based on who we are. The year is 1936, and two brothers, scientists Alec and Cyrus Dorn, lead an expedition to the waters of the Atlantic Ocean to investigate an anomaly. When the brothers approach the site, they and their three companions vanish into thin air. The brothers appear on a mysterious island that is both here and not here and ruled by a sadistic and insane king who kills one of their party as a way of saying hello. Realizing they must first confront the king before making any attempt to get back to their world, the brothers set in motion a bloody confrontation and discover that, sometimes, when you grapple with a madman, it is easy to become one.
Somewhere by Ryan Freerksen is a believable fantasy tale similar in style to the classics of yore. The plot is focused primarily on power struggles fueled by a clash of personalities and strength of character. Strong themes permeate the story and include the corrupting influence of power and the effect of psychological strength and weakness in a crisis. Intriguing and original world-building builds subtle immersion, and I was slowly drawn into and captivated by the strange yet realistic land depicted in the novel. Rounded out by a great cast of characters ranging from villains to heroes, Somewhere is a delightful fantasy story and a poignant reminder that who we are as a person is oftentimes an illusion of circumstance.
