Sophie Can See by Fynisa Engler is about a sloth named Sophie who always seems distracted. She sits too close to the television, struggles to copy words from the chalkboard, steps on sticky bubblegum on the playground, walks right past her brother during tag, and even keeps walking past the snack bar at the carnival. Everyone, from classmates to her family, believes that Sophie simply never pays attention. But when she goes for an eye exam, readers discover a surprising and relatable truth that will change everything they thought they knew about Sophie. Readers are invited to find out what is really going on with Sophie.

I absolutely enjoyed reading Sophie Can See. The illustrations by Robin Dewitt and Patricia Dewitt-Grush added charm and humor that made the story even more lively, turning each moment into a visual treat for children. I especially enjoyed how Fynisa Engler narrated this story with gentle humor and empathy, as she made Sophie’s challenges engaging and understandable. She also gently conveyed the message to children and parents to look beyond first impressions and see behavior as a clue instead of a flaw. Readers who enjoyed similar picture books like Llama Llama Misses Mama by Anna Dewdney would be impressed with Sophie Can See. Engler delivers an uplifting story that teachers will enjoy reading during storytime or that parents will enjoy reading to their children at bedtime. I also appreciated the thoughtful look at self-discovery and the importance of understanding what children need to succeed.
