Author Biography

David Burton is an American writer living in sunny Southern California. He traveled by thumb and motorcycle through Mexico, US, Canada and Alaska. From motorcycles he turned to the ocean, building and sailing his own boats to Mexico, Tahiti, Hawaii, and through the Panama Canal to Florida. He spent a lot of time reading while on the water, so he decided to write the books he would have wanted to read at sea.

Having swallowed the anchor he now mops floors and collects trash for money, writes for a living, and has become a (temporarily?) unrequited sailor.

“When a soul is sent to the wrong place, a certain specialist goes into Hell, finds the misplaced soul, and delivers him or her to Heaven's Gate for proper processing. If the specialist dies in Hell proper, his or her soul is trapped there for all eternity. Retrieving souls is a secret to all but a few, though it has been going on for centuries. Retrieval helps restore the balance between Heaven and Hell. These specialists who risk damnation are known, among those who know of them, as Soul Retrievers.”

I find the concept of David Burton’s Soul Retrievers new and interesting, even though this ‘clerical error’ of sending souls to Hell is quite disturbing. The Soul Retrievers are ordinary humans with extraordinary bravery, which is of course a much needed trait if they want to rescue someone from Hell. And their preparation to go there is almost so normal that it amused me – Swiss Army knife, two Space Blankets, light-weight binoculars, gloves, two changes of underwear, two pairs of socks – with the exception of the special staff, gun and crucifix.

Getter is one of the best retrievers, but he’s taking the next assignment a bit too personally when he has to retrieve the soul of a ten-year-old girl, the same age his own daughter would have been had she lived. His journey in Hell is fascinating and disconcerting at the same time, and there’s a secret war brewing. I gravitated toward the enigmatic Sneaker and her story instantly, a fellow retriever who became a vampire. Burton has developed a refreshing premise regarding the afterlife and the plot is one the best that I’ve ever come across. All in all, this is a solid supernatural adventure.
