Sparkle by Alexandra Hoffman is a beautiful tale of encouragement for young children who might be struggling at school. Jasmine is a gracious little girl who loves to listen to stories. She loves stories to be read to her, but she has one problem—she doesn’t like to read or write. When she tries to write, she mixes up her letters, and her writing is largely unreadable. Jasmine worries that she cannot write as well as her classmates, but one day, something happens that changes her life. Ms. Anderson asks the students to write a short creative story. Jasmine is afraid because she is not sure if her story will make sense to her classmates. Then an idea sparks in her head. How does this idea help her create her story?

I love how well-illustrated the book is. The illustrations by Beatriz Mello were captivating and made me want to explore more pages as I read. The book teaches valuable lessons to kids and addresses the idea that everyone is different or unique in their own way. When children meet others who may not learn as they do, they should accept the "different" person. Everyone can sparkle, irrespective of their gifts or limitations. Jasmine sparkles despite her worries about fitting in with the rest of her class, a feeling that any child can understand. Children will enjoy this book and learn from it. They will learn how not to limit themselves but to try what they know how to do. The process Jasmine goes through to “sparkle” is real, courage-filled, and encouraging. Sparkle by Alexandra Hoffman is an engaging book suitable for children aged six and up. It encourages them to think creatively when solving problems.
