Speak Her Name follows Dr. Mary Jumbelic’s lifetime journey as a forensic pathologist in cases of violence against women. Central to the memoir is her re-examination of Leslie Neulander’s suspicious death, initially ruled accidental, where she finds forensic evidence of homicide despite community disbelief and resistance. Alongside this, the author pieces together her personal life and experiences, and professional investigations of abused and murdered women, revealing patterns of hidden brutality. Throughout, Jumbelic works through her scientific acumen, the emotional toll of the work, ethical challenges, and the prevalence of social denial of domestic violence, all leading to her advocacy for victims’ voices to be heard and justice served. Leslie’s case becomes the focal point where personal, professional, and community machinations collide as she fights to uncover what caused Leslie’s death.

Speak Her Name: Stories from a Life in True Crime by Dr. Mary Jumbelic offers a gripping glimpse into forensic pathology through clear, precise, and engaging writing. The book stands out for its detailed recounting of real cases. The most shocking to me was Jill’s unbelievable poisoning following severe head trauma, which showcased Jumbelic’s sharp forensic acumen. Her professional insights into autopsy procedures and crime scene analysis are conveyed with clarity and respect for the deceased, but her skill as a writer comes through in the human elements surrounding each case, balancing medical detail with the broader context of investigative work. At its heart is Leslie Neulander, and she is someone readers will become deeply invested in. Overall, this is a heartening and informative memoir and a bittersweet work. Very highly recommended.
