In B. Marcus Walker's Spirit of the Plain, after Shield officers destroy House Truitt in Grayhaven, Collier Truitt flees into the Forest Plain, a dangerous territory ruled by Allouhuille, the power bound beneath the continent. Collier seeks the Yurbo, his father’s people, hoping they will help him return home with force, but their laws draw him into a sacred council at Perdita e Falmy. Far away, Ash, a young bruja sold into prophecy, is taken toward the same place by rulers who believe she can break the Plain’s curse and open new land. In Grayhaven, Lyken refugees face suspicion while their leader asks for asylum. As each path moves toward the Plain’s holy city, one act of magic may decide who controls the continent.

Spirit of the Plain by B. Marcus Walker is a massively ambitious and sweeping fantasy, and Walker does an excellent job of drawing readers into what promises to be a worthy new series, The Unnamed. Collier, the grandson of a defeated family in Grayhaven, where his mother was murdered, is a protagonist we want to root for. We see him grow exponentially, like when he harms a Yurbo nomad during a travel rite, feels guilt, and then later carries two children from the Yurbo sacred order away from arrows. I love the wolf-bodied Lykan leader, who asks Grayhaven’s council to shelter refugees from his invaded homeland. The landscapes are visual, with Perdita e Falmy, the Yurbo holy city, giving the book its finest image: a steam-washed travertine ridge around Mori Imbo, the blue sacred spring. Well written and immersive, fantasy readers who enjoy sacred geography, clan law, and prophecy will adore this. Very highly recommended.
