"Spoiled" by Heather Cocks and Jessica Morgan is an excellent read for 4th grade through adults. Although the book is meant for preteens and teens I thoroughly enjoyed it. My copy was in the audio format. There are several lessons to be learned in "Spoiled": the importance of family, the message that actions and words cause damage and can’t be taken back, and the importance of forgiveness.
Just before Molly’s mother, Laurel, died she revealed that Brick Berlin was Molly’s father. Berlin was a famous actor; Laurel was a costume designer on one of Brick’s films. Before she could tell him she was expecting his child he married someone else. Though Brick never met Molly again he did keep track of her through her mother. After Laurel’s death Brick invited Molly into his home and his heart. Life in Los Angeles is shocking to Molly. She wanted a relationship with her father and new sister but the media would do anything for a story. While her father seemed pleased with her presence, it soon became obvious that her sister wasn’t. Brooke Berlin, Brick’s daughter, was shocked to discover that she had a sister. She was not only shocked but she was jealous too at his eagerness to bring her into their home to live. It was difficult enough to get his attention without having to compete. Brooke was determined to look good in her father’s eyes while she subtly sabotaged this new half-sister.
I absolutely love this tale. Authors Heather Cocks and Jessica Morgan combine humor and drama to create a tale that kept me listening. The antics of Brooke and Molly were very realistic. I was unfamiliar with Cocks and Morgan’s work; now that I have been introduced to them I will definitely be looking for more books by them.
