Old man Jack and his unlikely companion, St. Sebastian the rat, travel the world together. They’ve seen many places and met many people but wherever they go Jack is met with ridicule and spite. This is all because of his strange beard. Jack becomes dejected from the constant bullying he faces but Sebastian won’t have it. With the help of his wise yet odd little friend, Jack is able to overcome these troubling times and realize that every dark cloud has a silver lining. The two will take on many more adventures together in a new light and with a new perspective on life.
St. Sebastian, Jack and The Silver Lining is a beautifully written children’s book that addresses a few issues young children will face in life and shows a positive way to deal with them. The story itself focuses on Jack’s far from normal appearance and shows that you should love yourself and embrace your unique qualities. It also teaches you about perspective and that having a positive outlook can lead to positive outcomes. The rhyming within the story is very well done and I think it would appeal very much to young children. The artwork for the book is colorful and fun, matching perfectly with the tone of the story throughout. Overall, Milly K Reynolds has created a wonderful story that addresses not only children but adults as well. It is a story and lesson that can resonate with anyone, regardless of age.
