Stahno the Space Explorer (Discover the Magic of Artmaking) by Lan H. Reilly is a children's story that celebrates art and adventure. It is centered on Stahno, a Caspian seal who dreams of zooming across the stars to see other planets. With the help of his trusty robot friend, Stahno puts together a rocket ship from a kit. When he finally lands, he finds himself on a planet that’s completely black and white. The lack of bright colors bothers him, so he teaches the locals about primary and secondary colors. He later visits a planet where everything and everyone is flat. The walruses on the flat planet want depth like Stahno, but helping them gets him in trouble. Stahno flees to another planet and meets royalty. He teaches them about proportion and perspective.
Stahno the Space Explorer isn’t just a fun ride into outer space. It’s a creative dive into art and imagination. You learn about drawing while following Stahno on his journey. Lan H. Reilly doesn’t just tell you about color theory or how shading brings drawings to life. You actually see it in action. The book also shows you how to use proportion and perspective to make things look bigger or smaller. The lessons are well-placed in the story. Each one is made memorable by the quirky characters that Stahno meets on his journey. The author has included a glossary that perfectly summarizes the lessons in this book. And the art is vibrant with all kinds of seal characters that you will enjoy getting to know. The environments of each world are unique and creative. I had a great time reading it. If you love art, drawing, or quirky space stories, you should check this one out.
