Stars Beyond the Veil by Karl Petersen follows fifteen-year-old Kate and her two friends, Analyse and Nolan, on yet another enthralling adventure to the magical Kingdom of What Is. After accidentally burning down an old distillery, Kate, Analyse, and Nolan suddenly find themselves in the Kingdom of What Is. But a lot has changed here since their last visit. The Plague of Endless Veil covers the land, bringing sickness and misery to everyone, while the despot, Malum, has exiled the rightful King Athar and Queen Sapienta. In search of Prince Sevar, Kate and her friends find the resistance, which is trying to wage a rebellion. However, Malum is building ships to attack the Athar Islands. Can Kate and her friends overthrow the tyrant's regime?
A coming-of-age story about adventure and rebellion, Stars Beyond the Veil is a treat for young adult fantasy readers. Author Karl Petersen's worldbuilding is magnificent. The Kingdom of What Is truly feels like a lived-in, magical world full of extraordinary creatures, formidable villains, and brave heroes willing to sacrifice themselves for the greater good. Petersen's attention to minute details makes the narrative immersive for the reader. The plot is well-paced and features many twists and turns. You know the stakes are high when the three main characters are separated in the middle of their quest. It adds tension and drama to the narrative. I loved that Kate, Analyse, and Nolan had to face their own share of challenges. An entertaining book for young adult fantasy fans.
