Still, At Your Door by Emma Eden Ramos is a captivating, fictional memoir written by a young girl, Sabrina Gibbons. After her father passes away, Sabrina’s mother, Sheila, embarks on a disastrous path in the form of an abusive relationship with a man named Jim. One morning, Sheila whisks Sabrina, her sister, Missy, and their half-sister Grace away to New York, leaving them with the girls’ Hungarian grandparents. For the first time, the girls are sent to a mainstream school where Sabrina discovers the theatre and is drawn in by a fellow teenager, Cameron. Sparked by her mother’s love of acting, Sabrina embarks on a journey of self-discovery and growth.
Miss Ramos’s book drew me in from the very beginning. My heart went out to Sabrina and her plight to find acceptance. I was clearly able to see the conflict in her heart about remaining loyal to her unstable mother and the desire to build her own place in the world. The book is written in a train of thought manner and I felt this was a great way to draw the reader into the character. My only criticism is that I wished the story had been longer! I hope the author intends to write a sequel to Sabrina’s story. I would like to see what becomes of her after the book ends. For someone to go through so much heartbreak and tragedy and still come out optimistic on the other side is something to be greatly admired. Still, At Your Door is well written and does not disappoint as a heartfelt, fascinating book.
