Going through a rebirth in a time when starting over wasn’t something that fell to the female of the species, Margaret Bailey, in Stone Donkeys, Negative Shadows, chronicles her journey as she navigated a tough world filled with sex, money, and intrigue. Being the first licensed female pipe-fitter in the Southeast wasn’t exactly the easiest row to hoe in a time when unions and men had complete control of all of the action. Still, she stuck it out for nineteen years, although she was kicked, threatened with death and severe injury, passed over for promotions and finally banned from company property. The desire to move forward and support herself and her family outweighed the desire to be on the public dole; so she thickened up her skin and built a life which transformed her.

Stone Donkeys, Negative Shadows sometimes reads like a thriller novel as truth does indeed become stranger than fiction in the way her life is laid out for all to see. It is a commentary and expose of the way things were before the world started opening up for women to be able to work in a man’s world. It is a classic example of how strong women stepped forward and determined their own destiny, as well as the destiny of others who would follow in their footsteps. The reader will be amazed at the endurance and fortitude shown by the author as she works through situations that would make most throw in the towel, but will be cheering her along with each turn of the page. This is very solid reading for anyone to enjoy and full of plenty of intrigue and suspense to keep the reader turning pages.
