Storm of Arranon: Allies and Enemies by R.E. Sheahan continues the saga of Erynn Yager. When her beloved Jaer is attacked and rendered unconscious, all Erynn wants is to find the cure as quickly as possible. At every turn she meets with obstacles and she is forced to follow an unusual and potentially dangerous strategy. Meanwhile, the inhuman Dhoran is at large again and plays a twisted game of hide and seek. His intended prize? Escape from confinement and conquest of Arranon - and he is willing to go to any lengths to achieve his goals. Soon Erynn is in a life-threatening situation and on a direct collision course with Dhoran and his secret allies. Will she be able to outwit them and save Jaer? Or will she fall prey to a wild hunt that seems to be spiraling out of control.
Erynn remains an engaging and realistic character - and a worthy heroine who seizes the opportunities that present themselves to her, rather than waiting to be rescued like a stereotypical damsel in distress. Her unusual and supernatural abilities give her a fascinating edge and this element of the story continues to intrigue. These talents are, of course, severely tested when a number of odds are stacked against her. Ever present is the possibility of being unmasked as a half-blood - something that should not be. This makes for nail-biting tension and a fast pace that is relentlessly sustained. The world-building is solid and multi-faceted. Storm of Arranon: Allies and Enemies by R.E. Sheahan should appeal to readers who enjoy their science fiction with just a sprinkle of fantasy and a pinch of romance thrown in.
