Sundown is a work of fiction in the action, thriller, and dystopian fiction subgenres, and forms the first installment of the Derailing Dystopia book series. It is best suited to the general adult reading audience. Penned by author Carl H Mitchell, in this thrilling and fast-paced work that’s full to the brim with conspiracy, intrigue, suspense, and danger, we meet a group of people trying to survive and build a better future in a fragile, dying world gripped by harsh controls. Set in 2057 during a crisis that has seen half the world’s oil become lost, NYCPD Detective Nick Garvey has multiple assassinations, political power wars, and his own personal vengeance mission to contend with.
Author Carl H Mitchell has crafted a novel that packs a lot of content into every single moment, resulting in a fully loaded thriller novel that always has something deeply exciting going on. I was absolutely drawn into the character development of Nick Garvey, a man with a lot on his plate and who isn’t afraid to let his emotions out when the going gets tough. He uses this rage against the overarching controlling powers of the world around him well, dodging bullets in a political game that sparks danger at every turn in order to find out what’s really going on at the top of the food chain. The action scenes were well narrated with short sharp sentences and cinematic descriptions. Overall, I’d say that Sundown is a blockbuster of an opening novel, and I really can’t wait to see where this enthralling series goes next.
