Sunset at the Hotel Mira Mar is a collection of 28 poems penned by Herb Guggenheim. These poems recount the life story of a narrator called Pete Sussman. The poems are divided into three sections and cover Pete's life -- from his early childhood experiences to Pete observing life and death as an old man who is prone to bouts of self-reflection. Using a wide range of styles and techniques, including sonnets, villanelles, and free verse, Guggenheim presents a collection that showcases poetic storytelling at its finest. The book features poems about Pete Sussman attending the fair as a child, discovering God in high school in unexpected ways, Pete developing a crush on his Zoology teacher, falling in love, quitting a job by being rude, learning about self-reflection, and many more.
Easy to read and immensely immersive, Sunset at the Hotel Mira Mar is a poetry collection for both poetry lovers and fans of coming-of-age fiction. The main protagonist of these poetic narratives, Pete Sussman, begins as your everyday young man with hopes, dreams, and desires and, by the end of the book, grows into someone who thinks about the deeper meaning of life, death, and consciousness. These poetic narratives put the reader into the mind of Pete Sussman as he narrates his journey of life. Herb Guggenheim experiments with different poetry styles throughout the book yet presents his poems in a way that is accessible and enjoyable to the reader. If you enjoy poetry and poetic storytelling, this will be right up your alley!
