Supermoon by Sue Lancaster is a children’s illustrated story that is narrated by a character/hero called Supermoon. Supermoon acts as a teacher to the reader, giving information about himself in a lyrical and charming fashion. Supermoon wears a cape and shows how he comes to the rescue of stranded whales, how he helps animals to see who is hunting them at night, how he helps protect the earth from asteroids, and more. The end of the book gives some fun facts about a supermoon to help children understand more about that white glowing thing, hanging in the sky.

The colorful pages are bright, bold, and dynamic. The illustrations by Tincho Schmidt are drawn in an action style that young readers will find entertaining each time they pick it up to read. This is a story where adults can sit down with young children and talk about the moon they see when they look outside at night. It can help connect them with the natural world in a fun and exciting way, and perhaps incite their curiosity to learn even more about the moon in the future. It can also help calm and comfort children who may have trouble falling asleep at night when they realize that the moon is there to help them and keep them safe from events outside their control. Supermoon by Sue Lancaster takes some of the mystery out of the celestial night and shines a night light on moon facts in a colorful, exciting, and engaging way. Highly recommended.

In Supermoon, Sue Lancaster introduces children to fun facts about the moon. In an age when all children know about superheroes, Sue uses the superhero theme to share the moon’s amazing influence on Earth and all the creatures that live on it. Even though the moon (especially the supermoon) provides light at night, it has no light. The light we see is a reflection of the light from the sun. The moon also affects the tides and waves of the oceans. Supermoons can even deflect asteroids headed toward Earth. Children will learn the basics about the moon and start to appreciate how important the moon is to a properly functioning Earth. It is always great when children can learn while having fun. This book provides fun educational facts about the moon.

At certain times in the lunar cycle, the moon is known as a supermoon. Sue Lancaster uses this fact as a launching point to create an enjoyable children’s rhyming book, Supermoon, that teaches while it entertains. Tincho Schmidt's delightful illustrations emphasize the various points Sue makes in her writing. Children tend to remember better when they enjoy learning, and this book will both teach and create a desire in young readers to learn more about how the moon affects Earth. Sue gives definitions and other fun lunar facts at the end of the book. Giving the moon anthropomorphic characteristics makes this book ideal for young readers. I recommend you spend time with your child, reading this book and discussing the moon while introducing astronomy into their education.
