Sweet Eclair and the Birthday Cake Surprise is a fun-filled children's story written and illustrated by Allie Compeau. Eclair is a young girl who wishes she could bake beautiful and delicious cakes like her mom does. Eclair helps Mom with Granny's birthday cake and gets to decorate it by herself. Her older sister, Lisa, who is mean to Eclair at the best of times, laughs and tells Eclair that she will surely make a hash of the cake's decorating. When Eclair indeed makes a spelling mistake when attempting to write in the icing, "Happy Birthday, Granny," she is overcome by worry and thinks that Lisa was right in saying that she would flop the cake. At Granny's party, Eclair is still worried, almost terrified, before the cake is unveiled. But, it turns out that Granny loves it, even saying that it is Starry Night, her favorite Van Gogh painting, much to Lisa's dismay.

The emphasis of Sweet Eclair and the Birthday Cake Surprise is on fun and learning through fun. Eclair's mad and worried eyebrows, as Allie Compeau describes it, carry strong emotions, yet her anxiety and sorrows prove to be temporary and soon turn into delight. Kids will learn that life has its ups and downs, but in-between moments also count for a lot and that life has a way of coming up with the nicest of surprises. The illustrations capture the in-between moments, as well as victorious ones, very well and add to the book's sense of fun. The story ends with Eclair's kitchen rules and a vanilla cake recipe. Allie encourages young readers to share their recipes and favorite parts of this adventurous baking story—an all-round winner, which, apart from tons of fun, also has important themes and lessons.
