In Sweet Revenge by Jacqueline Varlotta, a princess is now a servant; that is, until she discovers the power within her that will change her whole life. Mika was four years old and a princess when her father, the king of Mareedikhan, sent her to live with her grandmother. Her grandmother is a servant to the royal family of Saudi Arabia, so when Mika comes to live with her grandmother, she has to live in the palace as one of the servants. Despite the new social standing, Mika is finally where she belongs and feels happy, but she still yearns for more. When Mika finds out that she is a witch, all the pieces fall into place. Prince Bendar, the obnoxious prince of the palace, wants to show Mika her place in her new life, but she has a big surprise for him. When she takes her revenge, it is oh so sweet.
Sweet Revenge by Jacqueline Varlotta is a nice surprise. I was not really sure about the novel because I felt that it should be in the paranormal category, having the mention of “witch.” But I do get why it can be taken as Women’s fiction and contemporary fiction. I really loved the fact that the main story began right from the first chapter, the writer did not dally with showing the “real” characters. What you see is really what you get. The emotions are pretty high from the get go, but it is also fun to read. I loved Mika and her spunk. She is determined and courageous (all the things I love about female characters). She is no damsel in distress and I adored the subtle but obvious attraction between Mika and Bendar. Simple, fun, a little eclectic and a whole lot of entertaining, Sweet Revenge deserved these five stars. An amazing story of struggle from the past, present, and the acceptance of the future.
