Tastes Better From Scratch Cookbook: Easy Recipes for Everyday Life by Lauren Allen is an everyday cookbook with the aim of creating meals that come from whole food ingredients, no matter which part of the day we are cooking for. Allen begins by introducing herself and the reason behind her book and incorporating tips to get the younger family members who might require some convincing on board. The recipes provided range from the simple puffed-oven German pancakes to homemade bread to the famed South Asian favorite, butter chicken. Each recipe is broken down with a list of ingredients, cooking tips and instructions, the occasional anecdote, and a glossy photograph of the end result.
May 9, 2022, will always be the day that I was taught by Lauren Allen that lasagne can be deconstructed and made into a soup. This was not an isolated incident, as the Tastes Better From Scratch Cookbook also made some pretty outrageous claims that blueberries and sour cream make for a delicious pie. When I was preparing the recipe, my husband walked into the kitchen and said, “This just looks wrong.” Lo and behold, it is incredible and will now be part of our regular rotation. There are many recipes for food that people will recognize and others, like the pie and lasagne soup, that will be new. Given the personable feel of the cookbook's message and the fact that it is about cooking with whole foods as opposed to whole diet foods, the Tastes Better From Scratch Cookbook will stand out in the field. Very highly recommended.
