Teatime Trouble by Tonya Penrose is a Shell Isle Mystery. Page and Betsy make a great team at solving mysteries and running a business. After getting a job catering an event at the Three Fables Inn, Page jumps at the opportunity to put together an afternoon tea and immerse herself in the inn’s beauty. The mystery focuses on a body found in the inn’s gardens and is the catalyst that draws Page into the secrets of the inn. Enlisting Betsy once again in her sleuthing shenanigans, Page dives into investigating a murder. When the mystery takes a weirder turn, she begins to wonder if there could be a ghostly explanation for the odd happenings reported at the inn. What secrets is the inn hiding? Page is determined to find the truth and turns to a delightful assortment of allies to help her.
Once again, Page and Betsy make a delightful sleuthing duo with great banter back and forth that continues to show how well the characters play off each other. The plot revolves around the balance they strive for in trying to run a business and also investigate a murder. There’s a nice balance between their personalities with their differences being used for comic effect. The other characters add to the charm and wittiness of the story, keeping the tone wholesome and light. These different personalities also help to maintain the cozy mystery genre with a clean mystery that is cleverly written and makes use of every character involved. Tonya Penrose creates unique phrases that add to what makes this story such a joy to read. An underlying theme of ghosts adds another layer of suspense to the mystery and leads you to question if the inn is truly ghost-ridden. Unbelievably charming, Teatime Trouble is a real treat that takes you from a British tea to hunting for ghosts as you follow Page’s murder investigation with an assortment of humorous characters.
