Terrific Teeth (Little Fears) by Tuula Pere is a colorful children’s story about Emma, who is old enough for her baby teeth to start falling out. But she is afraid and doesn’t understand why. When she asks her big brother, Liam takes the ornery sibling role and worsens the situation. And so her fears multiply. But her mother and father comfort her, and even make it a fun experience, with a tooth party to boot! Sometimes it is easy for adults to forget when they were small, and the fears they had were very real to them.
This story is perfect for six-year-olds who may not understand the changes that take place in their bodies. The book adds gentle humor and love from the parents (and yes, teasing from the big brother) to show the dynamics of family living, and how sometimes the parents need to step in and prevent any additional “fake news.” The artwork by Catty Flores is clever and fun, catching the expressions of family life with humor. The real value of the story is how the book turns the fears into play, relieving the stress of the child and focusing on celebrating the different stages we all go through. This concept of play can also be used in learning new skills, cognitive development, and a host of other practical things that children experience as they age. Terrific Teeth (Little Fears) by Tuula Pere takes the bite out of runaway fears and replaces them with understanding and lots of love. Highly recommended.
