The idea for author Cher Scholl’s novella Test Drive came from her teenage son Ashton: What if a teenager is taking his driving test when a monster starts chasing his car? Scholl liked the idea, added her imagination, and created this suspense-filled horror story. Sixteen-year-old Mason sets out on his practical driving test with Cal, his unassuming examiner, and soon the pair is thrown into a chase scene of monstrous proportions. The Harrow is a monster who destroys buildings and kills people as he furiously chases Mason’s car. While speeding through town after town to evade the Harrow, Mason and Cal try desperately to figure out what the monster wants. Among the few clues at their disposal are the words of a dying man, snippets of several electronic messages, and the voice of a woman named Dr. Lena Vale.
In Test Drive, author Cher Scholl throws the reader into the action almost immediately. Her short, choppy sentences add tension, while the banter between Mason and Cal offers comic relief. Scholl’s imagery builds a believable world around a science fiction plot. Readers can easily picture it when a grocery cart rolls slowly across a deserted intersection in a recently abandoned town and feel it when Mason’s heart pounds against his ribs. Mason’s perspective on the Harrow is challenged by new information midway through the story, making it clear that this is as much a coming-of-age tale as a horror story. It’s an emotional roller coaster that will appeal to teens as much as adults.
