The 4C Heart: Curls, Kinks, and Knots of My Dry, Thirsty, Single Soul by Anna E Styron is a bold, brave, and sometimes confrontational personal story of the author’s journey as a woman. It opens by explaining the title. “Black hair, like the heart, can be very complex.” Characteristics like curls and kinks require tender loving care to embrace their inherent textures and beauty. That same care is essential for healing the author's complex heart. This open and honest tell-all story is full of diary entries, prayers, and snapshots of painful memories as Anna takes readers on her rollercoaster journey to womanhood. There are the ups and downs of tumultuous relationships with men, an unplanned pregnancy, and sexual encounters that shape her identity and influence her self-love. The too-often dark days of her past are viewed through her spiritual mindset. “God must break us down…so that He can shine even more through us,” says the healed author with her head held high.
The 4C Heart: Curls, Kinks, and Knots of My Dry, Thirsty, Single Soul by Anna E Styron calls for women to embrace their journey, no matter the path they take, and to be shameless about it. Despite being “frozen in fear” at times, Anna’s message of hope is steadfast. She struggled through abortion, suicidal thoughts, and financial woes before deciding to walk with God full-time, not just when it suits her. Healing requires her to be comfortable and successful as a single woman rather than as someone’s wife or partner. Her road to salvation must put her first and be fully responsible for her actions. Anna openly admits her regrets. The now pro-life advocate is passionate about helping women make short-term choices that will affect them in later years. She concludes “Faith is like a muscle: it is only going to get stronger when you exercise it.” The book is intended to inspire others that may be going through similar pains like separation and divorce, single parenting, personal anxiety, depression, and sexual abuse. The author hopes that other women will share their stories and be inspired by her healing journey. Sharing her vulnerability with the world, she wants other sisters to be strong so that everyone around them reflects their beauty.
