The Abyss of Lumberwitch by Dom Cutrupi opens The Abyss Series and it’s a great story in the young adult fantasy genre but it also has hints of science fiction and adventure. The story begins with how Jonathan Brick, journalist for Seattle’s Daily News first met Melody, the five-year-old girl with “the smile of a child and the eyes of a woman.” She becomes part of his life since that day of the turbulent storm and has been his closest companion — like family — for the past fifteen years. Now on an assignment to investigate the mines, Jonathan and Melody will find something more intriguing and more precious than gold — a code written in an unknown language on the walls of the mines. But Melody seems to speak this language and deciphers the code as though she were speaking her own language, and soon they are embroiled in a powerful secret cult led by a deadly woman. Could Melody’s past be linked to this place with clues leading to an ancient civilization? And can the pair survive long enough to unravel this truth?

I fell in love with the cover of this book; its colors and the symbolic nature of the image, plus the simplicity in the design caught my attention, but I wasn’t prepared for what awaited me in the story. The narrative features intriguing characters. Melody is a mystery that both the protagonist and readers want to discover, plus the well-imagined plot, and the beautiful setting which combines elements of archaeology and a mining city to reinforce the sense of mystery. The writing is gorgeous and it’s one of the elements of this story that will entice readers. The Abyss of Lumberwitch is filled with harrowing thrills; it’s fast-paced, and Dom Cutrupi succeeds in engaging readers through every page of the book.
