Phantom’s Revenge: The Adventures of Air Angel by John Witcher tells the story of Angela Carter, who suddenly becomes a superhero overnight. One stormy night at the Wilmont University lab, Angela is deep in researching a strange artifact covered in odd markings. Suddenly, lightning hits the building. The next thing, she is glowing, and somehow she has got super strength and can fly. The next day, she explains her new powers to her friends Pam and Bill, and they also gain invisibility and super-stretching from the artifact. Just as they bask in their newfound powers, they learn of The Phantom, a giant, living stone creature terrorizing the city. Angela jumps into action and confronts the person behind the Phantom, John Dant, a man seeking the artifact and a Medallion of the Phantom in a quest for power and world domination.
Phantom’s Revenge: The Adventures of Air Angel is an entertaining story that combines comic elements with modern myths of power and destiny. It has some great hallmarks of superhero dramas: a mysterious source of superpowers, teamwork, an ambitious villain, and a bit of humor. John Witcher makes his story stand out by adding a modern, realistic twist that makes you feel that this could happen to anyone. Angela’s curiosity shines through, and her warm friendship with Pam and Bill is beautiful; you can also really feel for John Dant because he is not just a villain, but a guy desperate to prove himself after being humiliated. Then there is the whole mystery around Destiny, Angela’s missing friend, plus the hunt for the medallion, which all keeps you turning pages. At its core, this story is about courage, fate, and what it takes to save the world. I loved reading this book. If you are into superhero stories that examine the price of power and draw on old legends and lost relics, this is a great pick.
