Jessica Jones and Sox are two beloved Jack Russell dogs. They live with Grandpa in rural Australia. Grandpa is an aboriginal elder and he takes them on his adventures into the deepest parts of the forest. The dogs might be cute and generally speaking well behaved, but their curious nature sometimes gets them into trouble. As they go on adventures with Grandpa, they encounter all kinds of natural plants, birds, and wildlife. It’s a fascinating journey, one they document with photographs of their discoveries.
Russell Irving’s picture book story, The Adventures of Jessica Jones & Sox and Grandpa, is an entertaining and fascinating story, not just of two adorable dogs, but of the land in which they live. For someone who lives halfway around the world, this story is a treat and an adventure in itself as Jessica Jones and Sox share all that they do and see. The photographs are spectacular and add to the appeal of this book. The author introduces the geographic location with a simple descriptive passage and some beautiful photographs. Then he introduces the two dogs and provides some interesting facts on Jack Russells in a little sidebar (he uses this sidebar technique often to add more interesting information).
Russell Irving frequently asks questions to allow the reader to feel engaged and an active part of the adventure. He provides a detailed list of equipment needed for going on longer adventures into the bush and, later on in the book, challenges the reader to see if they can remember all that he packed for the trip. The book is interesting, entertaining, informative, and educational, a real gem for all to enjoy.
