The Alligator & the Ducklings by Michael J Collins is a delightful story for young readers set in a beautiful lake in Florida, which is inhabited by many interesting creatures including Scobian ducks. They look majestic like a swan, but some of them have small red feathers crowning their head like a cardinal. Once thirteen ducklings hatched from one of the Scobian ducks and, like most babies, they are always hungry. A kindhearted lady feeds them daily and the ducklings become strong and big. One day these young ducklings go for a swim without their mother, under the watchful eyes of the sea gulls. But they are spotted by the alligator who referred to himself as the King of the Lake. Will he eat the ducklings? Or will the ducklings live happily ever after with their mother?

The story is very entertaining with adorable pictures that make the characters and the scenes come alive. The beauty of the lake and cuteness of the duckling are palpable through the beautiful and colorful illustrations. It's a good bedtime storybook for children and is also good for read aloud sessions in classrooms and school libraries. It's a simple, fun read that will keep kids glued till the very last page. They will find the ducklings adorable and the alligator scary as the story progresses. The story also introduces young readers to a lot of other animals apart from ducks and alligators, and is also helpful in improving vocabulary.
