I absolutely loved The Ant Who Can't - La Hormiga Que No Puede by A.M. Vela and Mary Esparza-Vela. The story is about an ant named Frita who is not very good at carrying food for her colony. One day when Frita’s colony is attacked by a wasp, she learns what she is good at and ends up saving the day.

The main thing I loved about The Ant Who Can't is that it is written both in English and Spanish. This is extremely helpful to me. My husband speaks Spanish but I do not. He has been teaching our 3-year-old daughter Spanish. By having this book both in English and Spanish, my daughter and I can both learn Spanish together. Seeing what the sentences say in both English and Spanish leaves me with no doubt that I am saying it correctly. I also really liked that Vela included some facts about ants and wasps at the end of the book. I thought the illustrations were very cute because they highlighted what Frita did on each page.

I think that The Ant Who Can’t has a good message in it. Do not give up just because you are not the best at things. You should keep trying till you find something you are good at. This is exactly the kind of message that I want to teach my child. I recommend this book to anyone who is learning Spanish or English. This book does not have to be just for children. I look forward to learning more Spanish by reading more of Vela’s books.
