The Apron and Napoleon's Hat: The Good, The Bad and the Ugly Side of Medicine by Dr H. Murray is a medical memoir written in a humorous vein. The book takes us on a journey of how the author became a doctor. The author speaks about his childhood and how from being unambitious and irresponsible he decides to choose medicine and makes it to medical school. He works in numerous fields like general medicine, surgery, pediatrics, orthopedics, emergency medicine and many other areas. The author finally finds a job as a locum medical officer covering for those doctors who went on sick leave or holidays. The author shares with readers the experiences he has undergone with patients in psychiatry. His decision to change careers, restart his life again while still working as a part-time doctor, is also discussed in this memoir.
It is a well written memoir where the author also speaks extensively about many of his psychiatric clients. He also speaks about his own mental illness, despite coming from a family with no history of mental illness. The author has shared episodes from the fields he has worked in, making it interesting for readers. Readers can relate to the author's personality and behavior in life. The narration in many places is laced with a touch of humor, making it a light read. On the whole, the book is an honest memoir of a doctor which reveals the good, bad and ugly side of medicine.
