With captivating and colorful settings in Newport Beach and Orange County, The Bay: A Mystery & Suspense Novel by Davis MacDonald is a gorgeous treat for fans of mystery. The judge is supposed to be enjoying his vacation with his pregnant wife when he is suddenly dragged into a murder case involving one of the FBI’s cases. Now, what seems to be a homicide becomes a nightmare for the judge and he finds himself following a dangerous trail of crime and intrigue, racing against time to stop a terrible plot to bring death to Orange County. Can he find the mastermind behind this plot before it hatches into something horrible?
The Bay: A Mystery & Suspense Novel is a well-crafted story with a setting that comes out brilliantly through the narrative. This is the kind of mystery that shakes up the status quo, introducing characters like the judge, characters that are rock solid and that readers immediately like. The tension builds early and it builds fast. Davis MacDonald holds readers hostage to the suspense and keeps them that way until everything climaxes in a satisfying denouement. This isn’t the kind of book to pick up when you plan important errands because the errands won’t happen. The plot is constructed to keep you reading without noticing the passage of time. You are hooked from the start and your curiosity heightens through every page and you want to know what happens next. I found this book to be a perfect read in the mystery genre.
