The Best New True Crime Stories: Crimes of Famous and Infamous Criminals is the latest in a series edited by Mitzi Szereto and is a collection of stories about various actual crimes. The accounts span a lengthy period, including some that were perpetrated more recently. There are even descriptions of crimes that are centuries old. The cases are from various parts of the world and while you may be familiar with some, you may never have heard of others. Some details are gory and disturbing and may turn your stomach. As the title suggests, the stories involve both famous and infamous criminals, including celebrities, although each writer has their own style of conveying the facts of the case.
The Best New True Crime Stories: Crimes of Famous and Infamous Criminals by Mitzi Szereto is the first book in the series that I have had the privilege of reading. I can say that I am now a fan and I will seek out some of the previous works. All the stories were interesting, and most of them were new to me. Even regarding a case that I vaguely remember hearing about on the news, I gathered new information. At times I wondered what the judicial system was thinking when taking a particular celebrity to court. With the one case that is centuries old, I do question how much of the evidence is proven fact and how much is based on rumor because who knows what records survived from that time. That particular case has been sensationalized so it is hard knowing how much of it is what happened, especially to the poor victims.
