Heather Ogden brings us dystopian fiction for young adults in The Betrayal. In the city of Libertis, one man rules. Valerius Arabella is ruthless, holding the city in an iron grip. Break the rules, try to change them, and you will get caught and sent to a re-education facility. Valerius’ youngest child and only daughter, Angelette, doesn’t know who her father truly is. When her mother goes missing and her older brothers run away, Angelette is left behind, sheltered and kept from the truth. When small cracks start to appear, and some of the lies start coming to light, Angelette has to decide which side she will fight with and who she can trust. And then there is the question about the magic.

You know those books you read, finish, and then keep thinking about? Well, this is one of those. Author Heather Ogden has set the foundations for the series The Lies We Fear with precision and style in the first book. This story explores a world built on deception, manipulation, and lies, while calling it love. The characters are complex and interesting, and I believe there is so much more to discover as the story unfolds. The Betrayal has more than enough intrigue, action, and magic to entertain even the newest young adult reader. Each chapter reveals another layer of the story, keeping the pacing even and steady, while punchy dialogue drives the plot forward. This is a story you can completely lose yourself in while coming out at the end stronger than before.
